How to soundproof college dorm? If you are a college student living in a dorm, you might also ask the same question. If you do, you are in the right place. In this post, I will share with you some simple and quick tips on how you can soundproof your dorm room.
I can still remember my college days. I was exactly in the same situation. The sound and chatter outside my dorm room were so loud making every studying hour difficult. I could hear all the noise from my fellow students talking and laughing next door. Exam week was difficult for me.
Back then, I had no idea that I could do something to soundproof my college dorm room. But during my senior year, I started seeking ways to soundproof my own room. The only problem was that not all techniques were applicable due to the implementing dorm rules.
Fortunately, I found some simple yet effective soundproofing techniques that are compliant to the dorm rules. In this post, I will share with you those techniques. I hope this helps.
How to soundproof college dorm?
As mentioned, there are simple ways you can do to dampen the noise coming into your room. Here are the simple techniques.
1. Adding a carpet
Most dorms have a conventional floor with tiles or other hard floors. The problem with this is that sound is louder in solid surfaces. The good news is that there are ways you can do to minimize the noise.
One of the simplest solutions for this problem is to add materials that will help trap the sound and prevent it from bouncing off. Adding a carpet is what I found the quickest way to somehow reduce the sound. The carpet will absorb the sound and dampen it making your dorm room quieter than ever.
2. Add decorations on the walls
The other quick technique you can do is to add decoration on your walls. Yes, you read it right. Strategic placement of decorations and pictures on the wall could also help to dampen the sound.
Adding newspapers, egg cartons, and Styrofoam can help block the outside noise. However, although these materials could help make your room quieter, they may not completely eliminate the sound. But they can certainly improve the quietness in the room.
3. Add furniture
Aside from decorations, putting furniture in the room can also make the difference. It helps reduce and prevent the sound from bouncing off. You can also add bookshelf filled with books. You might not commonly hear this but bookshelves are great in dampening sound.
However, you don’t need to clutter your room with unnecessary stuff. So be wise and creative.
4. Put Curtains on the window
Windows are some of the weakest parts of the room. They are great entry points for the outside noise. Unfortunately, windows are challenging to soundproof. But if you really want to soundproof a college dorm, you need to take windows into consideration.
One of the effective ways to soundproof a window is to put curtains. Soundproofing curtains have enough density to block or absorb the sound (click here to check soundproofing curtains on Amazon).
The good thing about soundproof curtains is that they don’t just soundproof the room but also add the aesthetic value of the room.
Soundproofing a college dorm with soundproof curtains will not totally make the room quiet. However, it really dampens the irritating noise from your neighbors. This way you’ll get your focus back on studying.
5. Lay Plush Rugs on the Floor
As you might already know, hard surfaces amplify sound. So if the floor of your college dorm is made of tiles or other hard materials, echoes become a concern.
If you want to make the dorm room quieter, treating the floor is a good step. What you can do in this case is lay plush rugs on the floor. The good thing about this technique is that it is super easy and does not require technical skills. And most of all, it is cheap.
If you are living on the second floor of the college dorm, applying rugs may not only minimize noise but also help your neighbors underneath you undisturbed. The rugs will absorb the footsteps sound so that your neighbors won’t hear it.
If you can’t find the perfect rug for your floor, I have a few recommendations for you. You can check the prices and buy the following rugs on Amazon.
6. Fill Up all the Gaps in the Room
Any room will be soundproofed well if all spaces are filled up. However, placing furniture in the room alone will not completely fill the spaces. And if that’s the case, the noise will still linger around.
The next step you can do is to place canvas wall art (click here to see these canvas on Amazon) on the wall. Plants can also be a great addition to make your college dorm quieter.
7. Use Cork Board
If you don’t like canvas, then you can choose other materials such as corkboard (click here to check this material on Amazon). Cork board is a great solution to the disturbing noise.
This material will totally soundproof your college dorm but it will certainly help achieve your goal of soundproofing a college dorm. It is an excellent insulator too.
The combination of rugs (on the floor) and cork (on the wall) will definitely help your room quieter.
Don’t worry, you don’t need to cover all the walls of your dorm room. Some pieces of cork boards will do.
8. Use White Noise Machines
Well, you might be thinking that this technique has nothing to do with soundproofing. However, this will help to cancel out the disturbing outside noise.
White Noise Machine (click here to check this material on Amazon) actually producing a nice and soothing sound that will overpower the outside noise. In this case, all you’ll be hearing is the soothing sound from the machine.
Technically, you are using noise to eliminate noise here. If there’s no other way you can soundproof your dorm room using the techniques I shared above, then buying a noise machine can be your best option.
A white noise machine can produce a variety of ear-friendly sounds. It includes but not limited to the waterfall, ocean or wave sounds, and pouring rain.
The best thing about a white noise machine is that it is harmless and does not require special skills to implement.

How to Deal with Noisy Neighbors in College?
Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do to this situation. You cannot simply control other people.
However, there are some strategies you can implement to somehow lessen the outside noise. The following are good examples:
- Close the door and place a thick curtain on it. This is not the ultimate solution but will certainly help.
- Turn on an electric fan. This is not about canceling noise but creating another breed of noise. It is a good way to cancel the outside noise and only hear the background noise.
- Play your favorite music through your headphones. I tried this one before and it worked especially when listening to classical music.
- Buy a noise-canceling earplug. This will help you gain your focus while studying.
